HISTORY HOPS (CAMP SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED)

Date: 4th to 15th April ’11
Timings: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Location: Hippocampus, Koramangala

Ages: 5 to 7
Description: Get creative, splash some colour, go into the past and discover what each day has in store for you! Peek into the story of McDonalds, why the Titanic sank, listen to stories from the North Pole, write poetry, make a happy meal and do so much more! Don’t miss this 10-day journey into history!

About the Mentor: Alpa Bansal has been conducting activities at Hippocampus with great enthusiasm for many years. She always brings extra something to a simple art and craft session. Besides this, she has done workshops in USA and in India, and has specialized in Ceramics. She views Art as more than a medium of expression and communicates this in the activities she conducts.

THE THINKS YOU CAN THINK – A creative thinking workshop

(CAMP SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED)

Date: 25th to 29th April ’11
Timings: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Location: Hippocampus, Koramangala

Ages: 5 to 7
Description: The workshop will focus on inspiring creativity through role-plays & activities. The emphasis is on child’s acceptance of change, realization that problems can have many solutions and appreciation of their uniqueness thereby making your children confident thinkers and learners. By the end of workshop children would know how to apply convergent and divergent thinking and surprise you with witty answers!

Fee: Members – Rs. 1,500/-, Non-Members – Rs. 1,800/-

About the Mentor :

This workshop will be conducted by ‘Sparkling Mindz’ who are a team of qualified facilitators who want to inspire children to become confident thinkers. The facilitators for the summer are:

Sreeja Iyer, is an MBA post- graduate from the Indian School of Business and has had a corporate stint in marketing, strategy and technology in large organizations. In the past few years she has focused on education & training. She takes classes on ideation and creativity for students across ages. Most importantly, her emphasis is on learning through fun & play and inspiring children to be confident thinkers & learners.

Saritha Verma, is a teacher, teacher trainer and a corporate trainer all rolled in one. She has conducted sessions for children ranging from kindergarten to Engineering and her classes are always filled with fun & play, simple ways of understanding complex concepts and of course, loads of creativity.

AGES 6-8

ART ATTACK (CAMP SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED)

Date: 11th to 22nd April ’11

Description: Create your masterpieces with ceramic, mosaic tiles, marbles, shoes and much more! Spin tops this summer and learn all about the good old games.

About the mentor

Sarayu Perumal is a self –taught artist. She has worked for the Times of India (NIE) as an art consultant and conducted art, craft & story telling activities for children in Bangalore.

SAY CLAY! (CAMP SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED)

Date: 4th to 8th April ’11
Timings: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Location: Hippocampus, Koramangala
Description: Join the famous artist Pavan Sathya as he’ll teach you all about the art of clay play. Begin with freehand clay art and move up to wheel work. You get to make name plates, piggy banks, forms by hand pots on a wheel.

About the Mentor: Pavan Sathya is not only a noteworthy artist but also a reformist. He has conducted programs to conserve lakes and promoted the idea of using natural clay rather than plaster clay.

He is trained in advanced ceramics & Raku from Japan, and has also displayed his works in several exhibitions in Japan. His fascination with pottery and firing has motivated him to explore his talents further. He conducts workshops for children in schools and in his studio – Gopni- in Indiranagar.

ADVENTURE AHOY!

About the mentors:

Outback India is recognized to be the finest adventure outfitters in the country and they have been involved with adventure sports for the past 15 years. Their team consists of trainers committed to quality, service and safety.

Dr. Geeta Singh, is a retired professor from Jyoti Nivas college whose passion lies in adventure sports and has been an activist for the same since 1973. At present she’s focusing on promoting adventure sports among young children.

Smriti Singh, is a Graduate in Creative Communication & BA. She’s a national sports climber and has represented India twice in sports climbing. Smriti is also a adventure sports trainer with Outback India.

Keerthi Pais is the Chairperson of Indian Mountaineering Federation for Wall Climbing. Keerthi is the National coach for wall climbing and has won the country several international medals under his training. He also runs ‘Outback India’

TIME. TRAVEL. – A wood-working workshop

Ages: 8 to 14 years

Description: Replicate inventions of famous artists. Build Da Vinci’s sundial and a plane of the Wright brothers. Learn to chip and polish wood, and do each step right from scratch just like the artists!

About the Mentor: Namrata Vora volunteers for Aarti Home, an NGO that works for the girl child, as Member of Board and Director, Programs. Previously she has worked in the hectic world of consultants and multi-national companies, where she landed after a four-year long picnic at an IIT followed by one at an IIM.

A keen believer in the Montessori methodology, Namrata loves working with children. Her carpentry workshops – where she teaches the art of working with wood, bring together several of her passions. She volunteers at her children’s school where she works with children aged 6-12 years. She has also run summer camps at Hippocampus in the past years.

SO… YOU CAN SEW? – A needlework workshop (CAMP SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED)

Description: Design, stitch and flaunt your summer style. Learn techniques to sewing and designing belts, bags, bandanas and pouches and take home a little kit as a gift!

About the mentor: Ruhaina Khan is a psychologist by profession, but loves to sew.She believes that beginner sewing classes for kids are a great opportunity for kids to learn about self-reliance, ingenuity, resourcefulness and fashion independence. It also helps them to focus, improve concentration and sustain attention. And being capable of making your own anything is considered an environmentally responsible skill, much required in our current times. She hopes to share the art of sewing, so that others can enjoy this wonderful hobby.

About the Mentor:

Curiouscity has been created with the aim of promoting science in our communities. They attempt to get the children to create their own little moments of scientific discovery, their own little moments of WOW. Curiouscity is run by five individuals – Dr. Shonali Chinniah, Dr. Jandeep Banga, Umesh Malhotra, Sukanya Sinha and Utpal Chattopadhyay. This year’s facilitator is:

Nima Lama, is a software professional who has been conducting science sessions at Hippocampus for the past year. Prior to that he has taught science at a school level for several years.  He has great flair for working with children. Here’s what one of the kids in his camp had to say this year “This class was better than other science classes because we get to do it and figure it out.  I will force my mom to put me back next year.”

About the Mentor: Sruti Kulothungan After 5 years of learning and experimenting with cooking through her college days in Food science, she thoroughly enjoys herself in the kitchen. Cooking is one field that has kept her interest at any point of the day. According to her cooking is a way to creatively express oneself which is why she prefers to deviate from cliches from a cookbook.  “COOK LEARN AND HAVE LOADS OF FUN”, is what she says.

THE WRIGHT WAY – An aero-modeling workshop (CAMP SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED)

Gaurav Monga has been teaching Literature and Theater in schools for the past five years. He is also a writer and has recently begun publishing his own short stories. He would like children to get exposed to Literature which is not traditionally termed Children’s Literature but Literature children can reatd, enjoy and relate to. He has experimented with the film medium as well. He aims to spark the initial inspiration to read Literature by introducing writing.

About the Mentor:

Dr Chandra Shekhar Balachandran has over 30 years experience in geography education in India and the USA. He has taught teachers, students (middle school to post-graduate). He is also a frequent writer for the Young World supplement of The Hindu newspaper on geography topics for kids. He believes that a good geography education enriches everything we do. His research interests are in cultural geography. He is the founder and director of the GeoVidyaa Geography Centre of Excellence, a project of The Indian Institute of Geographical Studies

About the mentor: MD Riti is an ex-journalist with over 20 years field experience with leading media organizations including the Times of India, Rediff.com, The Week and India Abroad. She is the founder of this company, writer, communication specialist, game creator and has vast experience in observing human behavior, in maverick politicians, criminals, sociopaths, movies and stars, theatre and big business.
